Well, my prep is not perfect but somehow I don't feel too bad about it. (On a bit of a self contradictory note... ) The tough part is not really being good but being good enough... Its amazing what difference an extra 1.5 percentile can make. from no calls to a couple of calls.... and from a couple of calls to everything...

I have been musing over the kind of hype surrounding the better management schools. It seems to me that a lot of people don't really evaluate the course and a B-School from their own perspective. Considering the innovative spirit that a manager or any sort of a leader must have, a surprisingly large proportion of people seem to be just in on it coz its the latest thing. If tommorow being an accountant was the trend... thats what everyone will be slogging their ass off over. Makes you wonder whether trends cause massive changes instead of the other way round. A paradox if i ever saw one! :)

I don't know what to make of the fact that something as trivial as "hype" affects perceptions on such a large scale. Maybe I need to stop thinking of it as trivial afterall. It seems to me that marketing isn't a complementary business activity.. its actually a part of production.

Brands - believe it or not - add value to a product! People pay extra for the same thing if the label on it is more highly regarded. This is not marketing then is it ? It's like the last stage of production...

I've had some bit of experience during my stint in Student's Affairs. The same sweatshop (pun intended ) in Noida used the same machine to make a thousand sweatshirts and then priced them according to the brand. This is hapenning on a global scale as companies shift manufacturing to places like China and count on marketing to be the differentiating factor.

Their is no such thing as value afterall.. it is the perception of value that matters.
